Gerald Dawavendewa (Hopi & Cherokee)

In ancient Hopi stories, there was a great creature who once terrorize the people and animals as it swooped from the sky and carried off men, women, and children. The Hopi called it Kwaatoko or Monster Eagle who was as tall as a man with a great wingspan that created shadows upon the land. Kwaatoko is finally confronted by the War Twins who in a great battle defeated Kwaatoko.

The Hopi also gave the name Kwaatoko to what is now known as the California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). With a body length of 4.5 feet (11.43 cm) and a wingspan reaching 10 feet (25.4 cm), the California Condor is the largest bird found in North America.
